THE SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE

... When I get to 14 i'll go to master's house.

I will serve him better than these older guys.I'll learn to speak exactly as he does

When he calls on me i'll scream yes sah!

Then i'll have oat to eat

i'll have a taste of their kind of palm wine. I'll be his choicest servant and i access into his room I'll steal from him and I'll run away.

"Bless me father for I have sinned"

"The Lord..."

"I did it... I'm sorry... He told me. He taught me that they chose their fate. I felt privileged to be his favourite so I learnt and imbibed everything he told me. I was loyal to the core and that's why he willed half his properties to me" the middle aged man swallowed "and the other half to the church"

"Who did what"Father Clement quizzed

When the table is set before the universe and all languages, what do you think will be the common ground on which we'll choose to meet?

Affluence ? When by the one factor of development we've all agreed that we are of different worlds- First world, second world and third world countries

Race? Then the table would have to be divided into a number to accomodate all

Technology?

Religion?

Preferences?

I tell you... for every category mentioned, they will be a greater divide. I'll tell you why. Two men could agree on a technological matter and on the spot attack each other on the subject of Race.

It's amazing how the immediate environment of a child affects the whole of his psychological makeup that he drags certain habits into the stage of adulthood. Even at that, every man is liable to his choices and each follows a model regardless of the many lessons at his disposal

It is this model  that attracts young Justin to the white house where he sees the whiteman stop every evening on his donkey.

"Master Justin" A boy ran into the study panting as he falls to the bare floor raising his head up to the frame of a man seated on a swivel chair facing the window blind.

Jolting from his thoughts, Justin turns slowly from looking through the window blind. "What is it Dubem?"

"Sah! Yes sah!! I found Odili's liveless body in the Kitchen. He's not breathing"

Prideful reality hits him as he reminisced on years back when he used to tremble before Master. Oh how he loved the way the boys addressed him with the strong African accent  sah!

"Really" Justin said with that usual expression that left odili confused "why again? Anyways get rid of his body"

He sat up, leaned forward on the table looking over at Dubem who was still panting whilst he clicks his fingers. He stared at him a little more in silence wondering how long it would take the innocent creature to figure it out. He felt pity for him for having such weakness called compassion

"Dubem, rats will steal your food. It is your duty to stop them”  he moves away from the window, closer to Dubem.

” Dubem, you are my favourite boy. You should know what to do. I still smell a rat though and we need to get rid of more of them lest they infest our food and have them to themselves”

Weeks  counts into months and months into years and more young men fight their way into Master Justin's house. Nobody knew what master Justin does. All that was known was that Master Justin was a business man who worked with the white men.

He would assemble all applicants and have them engage in physical combats to know who would win just to entertain himself. Whosever was the winner got an entrance into the house.

"I was 14 when I began to live at the white house. We were just young boys he took in yearly to himself. Hungry and malnourished as we were and fed us once a day. I used to be in that category until I snitched on Philip  when he wanted to hide some oats to eat. Master was convinced i was loyal and that was how I began to eat twice"

"In Philip's words"

I promised myself that when I get to 14 i'll go to master's house.

I will serve him better than these older guys.I'll learn to speak exactly as he does

When he calls on me i'll scream yes sah!

Then i'll have oat to eat

i'll have a taste of their kind of palm wine. I'll be his choicest servant and i when I have access into his room I'll steal from him and I'll run away.

"Go on my child"

"Then little by little I began to find liveless bodies of the boys in the kitchen and master would say  'the rats are dying ,our food is safer'. I'ld soon find out he poisoned the oats" he swallowed bitterly

"His legally adopting me as his son and including me in his will was proof that he had come to trust me. He left me with enough for a lifetime so I served him that night's dosage of the poison and threw his body down from up the hill where he made other bodies roll, even Philip , knowing he had a phobia for height."

“ Is that all?”  Father Clement inquired

"I am here today because my boys did what I could not do. I am in jail because Dubem my most trusted realized that the sanctity of human life is higher than any form of loyalty. Upon discovering my evils. He called the authorities”

When the table is set before the universe and all languages, what do you think will be the common ground on which we'll choose to meet?

I tell you… The reason  I would share a table with you is because i'm certain i'm safe with you.If you do not believe in the sanctity of the human life  You're an enemy to all

And...

If you do not love your own life enough to preserve it then mine is useless in your charge.

THE PHILOSOPHER'S OPINION

A  divided opinion is not very appreciated in a dark room. Everything skill comes handy- carpentry, welding, art but not the lose tongue of a travelling philosopher who loves to hear the sound of his own voice. There's a story you should know...  In the beginning... No, let's begin from now. Four men are stuck in the dark scuffling about the ancient lock on the gate. One is a welder who makes the best of doors in his community. The one next to him who has just delved to the other part of the room in sheer confusion is a carpenter. He was supposed to be in the governor's house to receive his incentive for consistently delivering beautiful furnitures to the governor's quarters. He's a fine young man in his late thirties. The third is an artist whose choicest paintings seat gracefully in museums. He has the curators from various museums begging for his piece. You could tell how his eyes keeps peering at the gate from every angle The fourth and the last who seem to be t...

THE ONE BIG FAMILY

I once overheard two housewives arguing over a glaringly severe matter. I drew closer and realised the topic of the whole debate was instructions and standard. Now the both women are good friends. They share a kind of relationship that seem to me like a Discipler- disciple relationship.  They are both growing Christians but I think you'll agree with me that not everyone is intentional with what they hear in church,so some are better as a result of application. Back to the event of the argument. Prior to that, they had been good friends and always there for each other. So on this fateful day, one entered the room of the other, let's say she's Mrs K. Meanwhile, her friend, Mrs J was outside doing the laundry ignorant that her friend was in her room and  had asked her 9years old son for drinking water. The little boy hurried outside innocently to take permission from his mum. No one knew Mrs K was offended by that cute and innocent act. We didn't know that for someone who...
